Shopping time!
2010. 2012. 2014. I think we all know how this story goes...
We all know the general story of the 2015 season for the San Francisco Giants. Defending World Series champions, Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey play true to form, Matt Duffy emerges as a regular starter, starting pitchers look old, lineup is decimated by injuries, miss the postseason.
Somehow despite all of the bumps in the road, the Giants won 84 games.
Hunter Pence played only 52 games. Joe Panik with 100. Nori Aoki only saw the field 93 times. Brandon Belt and Crawford each missed time.
Which means that it should only take a healthy lineup to make a strong push. But to get over the top, the rotation could use an upgrade. Outside of Bumgarner, the Giants had to duct tape the rest of the rotation together.
Tim Hudson, Jake Peavy, Ryan Vogelsong, Chris Heston, Tim Lincecum, and Matt Cain all had their shots but no one provided that consistency needed. Hudson has retired, Vogelsong and Lincecum are free agents.
That leaves a rotation right now of Bumgarner, Peavy, Heston, Cain, and possibly Yusmeiro Petit. It does not lend itself much excitement.
Luckily, the Giants are in the position to break out the checkbook in a big way. So who should the Giants go after?
Let's start with David Price.
The Toronto lefty may very well win the AL Cy Young Award and led the Blue Jays to the postseason for the first time since 1993. He is a great regular season pitcher and hasn't had an ERA higher than 3.50 since 2009, his first full season.
Think about a rotation with Madison Bumgarner and David Price. *Shivers*
Price has been the best pitcher on every team he has played for and that would not be the case in San Francisco. It might push him even more to come to a team that has won it multiple times with young stars just now entering their prime.
How about Jordan Zimmermann?
He isn't quite to the quality of Price but Zimmermann is just as nasty. The right hander was in the Cy Young conversation two seasons ago when he posted a 2.66 ERA with the Nationals. He was the pitcher that dominated the Giants in the NLDS for 8.2 innings before Matt Williams saved the day and took him out of the game.
He would come at a slightly cheaper price than Price and could allow the team to swoop up another arm.
Want to add to the Giants-Dodgers rivalry? There is always Zack Greinke.
What better way to cripple your most hated rival and the team that won the NL West than taking away one of their aces?
[SFGate.com: SHOULD THE GIANTS PURSUE GREINKE?]
Greinke might come at the highest cost but he is also coming off a season with an ERA of 1.66. He led the league in ERA, WHIP (0.84), and ERA+ (225) and his 5.00 K/BB ratio wasn't bad either. He may very well win his second Cy Young Award and did I mention he can hit? He hit .224 this season with two home runs.
The batting practices between Greinke and Bumgarner would be something to see.
The only hesitation would be that Greinke is already 32, two years older than either Price or Zimmermann, and he is likely going to be in the range of a six-year deal. While still effective now, will he be that way when he is 35, 36, or 37?
This is not a top of the rotation option but bringing back Mike Leake would lengthen the rotation.
[ESPN: GIANTS STILL HOPING TO RE-SIGN LEAKE]
There is no guarantee of what Matt Cain will show up in 2016 or, for that matter, Heston or Peavy. Peavy had his moment but with no consistency. Heston started to tire midway through the season.
Leake, much like the rest of the team, spent some time on the disabled list and should be able to rebound next season. He has had ERAs in the mid 3.00s while playing for Cincinnati and a few seasons at AT&T Park should lower that quite a bit.
And, of course, #EvenYear.
